AIRPORT GUIDE (Terminal, Map, Facilities)

Complete guide to Lanseria International Airport. Terminal map, facilities, check-in tips, parking, transport, security and everything you need for a stress-free visit to HLA.

Your Complete Guide to Lanseria International Airport (HLA)

Lanseria International Airport (IATA: HLA, ICAO: FALA) is located at R512 Pelindaba Road, Lanseria, Gauteng, 1748 — approximately 45 kilometres north-west of the Johannesburg CBD and 40 kilometres from Sandton. Open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, it is Johannesburg’s second commercial airport and the most convenient option for travellers from the northern suburbs, Pretoria and Centurion.

The airport’s defining characteristic is simplicity. Where OR Tambo overwhelms with its scale, multiple terminals, transit trains and sprawling gates, Lanseria presents a single terminal building that you can navigate end-to-end in under 5 minutes. From parking to gate, the entire process is notably less stressful.

The Terminal Building

Lanseria has a single terminal building that handles all commercial and charter operations. The ground floor contains the check-in hall (FlySafair, Airlink and charter operator counters), the security checkpoint, baggage reclaim carousels, and the car hire desks. On the first floor, Wiesenhof Restaurant occupies a large space with its signature open viewing deck overlooking the apron and runways.

The terminal layout flows logically from entrance to gate: park your car, enter the terminal, check in, pass through security, access the departure lounge, and walk to your gate. The walk from check-in to the furthest gate is minimal — Lanseria has no inter-gate trains, no long underground corridors and no signage mazes.

Both aerobridge and remote stand boarding are used at Lanseria depending on aircraft type. Commercial flights typically use aerobridges for direct boarding.

Key Facilities in the Terminal

Restaurants and cafés: Wiesenhof, Kauai, Vida E Caffè, Wimpy (weekdays only) Airport lounges: Bidvest Premier Lounge, Slow Lounge, Fluent Lounge Shops: Wings ‘N Things, Tom Voyager, Electro, Knick Knack Kiosk ATMs: Available in the terminal building Free Wi-Fi: Available throughout the terminal Baby changing: Available in the terminal and the multi-storey parkade Restricted mobility assistance: Available on request CCTV and security: 24/7 throughout the facility Medical facilities: First aid available Car hire desks: Avis, Budget, Hertz and others

Airport Layout and Runway

Lanseria International Airport has more than four runways, catering to both commercial jet operations and the large general aviation charter sector. The airport complies with all standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and regularly exceeds the requirements of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). The airport’s technical data, schedule of fees and airport charges are published and updated on the official Lanseria website.

All relevant government departments are represented at the airport for international operations, including Immigration, Border Police (SAPS), SARS Customs and Excise, Health, Nature Conservation, Agriculture, National Intelligence and Veterinary services.
