Lanseria Airport Parking Guide 2025 — Rates, Tips & Directions to HLA

Lanseria Airport Parking Guide — Rates, Tips and Full Directions

Parking at Lanseria International Airport is one of the most underrated travel advantages available to Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. Compared to the parking experience at OR Tambo — expensive, distant from the terminal, and navigated through a multi-storey labyrinth — Lanseria offers covered, secure parking directly adjacent to the terminal, at rates that are considerably more reasonable, with the first 30 minutes completely free.

This guide covers everything: current parking rates, how the system works, tips to save money, and step-by-step directions to Lanseria Airport from every major departure point in Gauteng.

How Parking at Lanseria Works

No pre-booking is required at Lanseria Airport. The parking system is first-come, first-served. On arrival, you drive through the boom gate, collect a paper ticket, find a bay, and park. Your entry time is recorded on the ticket.

When you return to collect your car, proceed to the payment machines inside the terminal building before going to your vehicle. Payment machines accept both cash and card. Pay for your stay, collect your validated ticket, then use it to exit through the boom gate.

Lost ticket: If you lose your parking ticket, a R250 charge applies. Keep it safe.

Golf cart service: Lanseria operates a free golf cart service on the parking apron for passengers who prefer not to walk to the terminal — particularly useful with heavy luggage or if you’re parked in a bay further from the terminal.

Security: The parking area is access-controlled with boom gates, interlocking spike barriers and 24/7 security guards patrolling on bicycles and Segways. CCTV coverage is comprehensive. You can leave your vehicle at Lanseria for days or weeks with confidence.

Covered bays: Most ground-level bays are covered with permanent carports — a significant benefit in Gauteng’s summer heat and thunderstorm season.

Should You Drive and Park, or Take an Uber?

This is the most practical question for most Lanseria travellers, and the answer depends on three variables: how far you live from the airport, how many people are travelling with you, and how long your trip is.

For trips of 4 days or longer: Driving and parking is almost always cheaper. Long-term rates at Lanseria are very competitive. A 7-day parking stay costs R475 — often less than two return Uber trips from Sandton.

For solo travellers on short trips (1–2 nights) from Sandton or further: Uber may be marginally cheaper. A Sandton–Lanseria Uber costs approximately R140–R180 each way, meaning a return costs R280–R360. Short-term parking for 2 days is R348. The numbers are close.

For groups of 2 or more: Driving and parking wins. The parking cost is split between passengers, while an Uber for two people costs the same as for one.

For the convenience-focused traveller: Driving and parking eliminates dependency on Uber availability — critical for 05:30 departures when rideshare drivers are scarce. It also eliminates surge pricing risk and means you walk to your own car on arrival at any hour, rather than waiting in a pickup queue. For early morning flights, driving and parking is the more reliable and often more cost-effective choice.
